Field activity at the UP Center for Documentation of Deportations, Expulsions and Resettlements – an inspiration for action for students

As part of the course ‘Cultural and educational work in social welfare institutions’, third-year social work students visited our Centre. The meeting included a visit to the permanent exhibition “Exiled to Siberia. The fate of Polish citizens deported deep into the Soviet Union during World War II”, a tour of Fort Skotniki, as well as a discussion of the Centre’s activities.
Field classes are an extremely important part of students’ education.

Here are some reasons why:

  • Practical experience: Field activities allow students to engage directly with practical situations and real-life challenges related to their field of study. They can put into practice the theory and knowledge they have previously acquired, which helps them to better understand and assimilate the material taught in class.
  • Professional skills development: By working in units cooperating with the institute, students have the opportunity to develop practical skills related to their future careers. They can learn from experienced professionals and gain knowledge that cannot necessarily be obtained in traditional theoretical classes.
  • Networking: Field activities give students the chance to network with professionals and experts in their field. They can build relationships that may prove valuable in the future, for example when looking for internships, apprenticeships or jobs after graduation.
  • In-depth knowledge of the industry: direct contact with the professional community allows students to gain a deeper understanding of their industry and learn about its realities. They can see how an individual functions and what its challenges and goals are. This helps them to deepen their knowledge and be better prepared for future work.
  • Self-development and adaptability: Field activities put students in situations that require flexibility, quick thinking and decision-making. This develops their adaptability skills and their ability to cope with different scenarios and conditions. Being in a working environment on their own also allows them to develop personally and build self-confidence.
  • Motivation and engagement: field classes are often more attractive and inspiring for students than traditional classroom lessons. Direct involvement in practice allows them to better understand the meaning and significance of what they are learning.
