Today we celebrate the anniversary of the end of World War II, as well as National Victory Day.
An important day, but also a difficult one. For many Polish citizens, the end of the war had a bitter taste. They were not given the opportunity to fully enjoy the victory. As a result of the war, Poland lost at least 5.7 million of its citizens, lost the Eastern Borderlands and found itself in the Soviet sphere of influence for many years.
Many Polish Siberians, after years of wandering, chose not to return to their longed-for homeland, fearing communist repression. Besides, their family homes were on the other side of the border, so they had nowhere to return to….
