Small towns – big history

In 2013, as a result of cooperation between the European Network Remembrance and Solidarity and the Centre for Documentation of Deportations, Expulsions and Resettlements of the Pedagogical University named after the Commission of National Education in Krakow, an international conference on ‘War and occupation in the memory and consciousness of the inhabitants of a small town’ and the premiere of the film ‘Cities of extermination. Between Wieluń and Złoczew”, directed by Małgorzata Szyszka and Hubert Chudzio The event was also accompanied by the exhibition “Small towns – great history. Between Wieluń and Złoczew”. The meeting was devoted to the subject of resettlement and expulsion of Polish citizens organised by the Germans during the Second World War, as well as the issue of forced labour of Poles on behalf of the Third Reich, which is very rarely discussed to this day. In addition to academics, it was attended by witnesses of history, students and secondary school students. The conference was held under the patronage of: Małopolska Voivode – Jerzy Miller, Małopolska Superintendent – Aleksander Palczewski, Head of the Office for War Veterans and Repressed Persons – Jan Ciechanowski, Rector of the Pedagogical University – Michał Śliwa and the National Centre for Culture.
