Today is the 81st anniversary of the capture of Monte Cassino!
On May 18, 1944, the banner of the 12th Regiment of Podolski Lancers hung over the ruins of the monastery on Monte Cassino, followed by the Polish flag, next to which the British flag was later also flown. At noon, platoon sergeant Emil Czech played the Marian bugle, announcing the victory of the soldiers of the Second Polish Corps.
The Battle of Monte Cassino is considered one of the fiercest of World War II, and the cemetery on Monte Cassino is a stark reminder of the more than 1,000 Polish soldiers who gave “their spirit to God, their flesh to the land of Italy, and their hearts to Poland.”
“ON THE TRAIL OF THE SECOND POLISH CORPS AND IN REFUGEE SETTLEMENTS – DEPORTED TO SIBERIA. The fate of Polish citizens deported deep into the Soviet Union during World War II.” – is the title of a new exhibition at the Center’s headquarters – Fort Skotniki 52 ½ N. We invite you to visit!
