Tanzania – Kondoa/Tengeru 2024. discovery of original Polish gravestones under later secondary

Tanzania – Kondoa/Tengeru 2024 – IS! WE HAVE IT! The discovery of the original Polish tombstones under the later secondary additions that have completely changed the character of the 1940s Polish necropolis into a cemetery resembling the current Tanzanian ones. There will be a lot of work, but there is great hope that our expedition will succeed in restoring a dignified appearance to a Polish necropolis in the heart of Africa. This is the most important part of the whole project, namely the renovation and reconstruction of the cemetery of Polish Siberians in Kondoa. About 430 of them lived here between 1942 and 1948. Keep your fingers crossed, because the challenges are great. Torrential rains, lack of electricity and flowers falling from the baobab tree, which dirty the gravestones terribly and do not help the work… More soon!
The project is carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Dar es Salaam and the ‘The Past Doesn’t Return, But It Doesn’t Die’ Foundation. Subsidised by funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage from the Fund for the Promotion of Culture.
