Heroes are passing away… The last surviving participant in the Battle of Monte Cassino in Poland has died.

Second Lieutenant Józef Kowalczyk, the last surviving participant in the Battle of Monte Cassino living in Poland, has died.
Józef Kowalczyk was born on March 10, 1924, in Lubomierz. During the Battle of Monte Cassino, he fought in the ranks of the 12th Podolian Uhlan Regiment of the 2nd Polish Corps. After World War II ended, he remained in Great Britain. In the 1960s, he moved to Australia. He returned to Poland in 2018, fulfilling his lifelong dream. He was awarded, among others, the Cross of Valor, the Monte Cassino Commemorative Cross, the Star of Italy, and the “Pro Patria” Medal. He passed away at the age of 102.
